Fall River Fire Department issues cause, details, concerning fire at 3-story residence that sent 2 to hospital, involved Good Samaritan

The Fall River Fire Department extinguished a major fire that could have been prevented.

According to Deputy Chief Neil Furtado, a fire broke out at 712 Eastern Ave just before 3:00 p.m. Friday, originating in a third-floor bedroom.

The third-floor apartment sustained significant fire damage, while the first and second floors experienced substantial water and smoke damage.

The building was equipped with functional smoke alarms, which were activated before fire crews arrived on the scene. Furtado stated that fortunately, the presence of these alarms likely contributed to the safety of the residents.

A bystander was identified as having entered the building and assisted in evacuating several occupants.

Two individuals were treated by FREMS (Emergency Medical Services) for smoke inhalation and were transported to area hospitals for further care.

The fire was determined to be caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials, specifically a cigarette.

The property owner is currently coordinating with their insurance provider and local building officials to begin renovations and repairs following the fire.
