Each year, firefighters hit the streets asking citizens in their community to make a donation to MDA and help them fill their boot with contributions. Fall River Fire begins their campaign Friday, May 18th.
According to the president of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1314 Jason Burns, Fall River Fire is approaching $250,000 in total donations since beginning Fill The Boot in 2011. Twice they were on top of all of New England, New York and New Jersey in donations. Burns pointed out that without the community, it wouldn’t be possible. “Firefighters are simply the vehicle people choose to donate. We have great community involvement.”
The Muscular Dystrophy Association uses the donations to care for adults and children with the disease and fund groundbreaking research.
$24 million dollars was raised through the campaign throughout the country in 2017 with over 100,000 firefighters participating.
