Fall River barbers giving away free haircuts for a cause

A trio of Fall River barbers are trying to make a difference in more ways than one.

Three city barbers are getting together to put on a community barber event where they will issue a free barber-style haircut to children 13 and under with a donation of a non-perishable item.

Noel Gonzalez, who is a barber at Shear Genius, and his wife are organizing an event in Little Compton and decided they also wanted to do an event in Fall River.

“My wife, Megan and I wanted to host an event for the kids in the city. It’s been a rough year for our youth and we wanted to do something for them.”

The haircut giveaway will benefit Progreso Latino. Progreso Latino helps Latino and immigrant communities to achieve greater self-sufficiency and socio-economic progress by providing transformational programs that support personal growth and social change. Some of the non-perishable suggested donations are diapers, cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, and potatoes.

“We wanted it to benefit an organization that has helped so many families through this pandemic.”

Noel is getting together with two barber friends who work at barbershops in Fall River to make his vision a reality.

“I reached out to the two other barbers (Danny Santiago – owner of Level Up Barbershop and Daryl Reís – owner of Wicked Good Barbershop). We had all worked together at Shear Genius in the past and remained friends. I’m still a barber at Shear Genius- Pleasant Street location. Danny and Daryl loved the idea and couldn’t wait to get on board.”

The haircut event will be taking place on March 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Level Up Barbershop at 26 Rodman Street. Booking is done by appointment only at communityhaircut.setmore.com. For questions or help with booking, contact Megan at meboudreau2@gmail.com.
