Easton, Stoughton, Sharon, Mansfield, Norton, Raynham, West Bridgewater and Bridgewater crews respond to blaze where pet was rescued

EASTON — Chief Justin Alexander reports that the Easton Fire Department extinguished a fire at a condominium complex on Sunday evening.

Shortly before 8:00 p.m., Easton Fire received a 911 call for a report of a fire in a condo unit located at 30 Pinebrook Lane.

All occupants of the building had evacuated prior to firefighters’ arrival. 

Upon arrival, firefighters saw flames and smoke coming from the second floor and roof of the unit. Firefighters quickly initiated an interior fire attack, holding the fire containing the fire to the one unit involved. The fire was located in the attic at the corner of the roof line, making it a challenge for firefighters to gain access to fully extinguish the fire. 

Firefighters battled the fire for approximately 45 minutes in high heat, humidity and heavy rain. After crews had the fire under control, they conducted extensive overhaul and checked for extension to other attached condo units.

No injuries were reported, and firefighters were able to successfully rescue the family’s cat.

The unit is deemed uninhabitable. Eight residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. Two other condo units sustained smoke damage.

On-scene mutual aid was provided by the Stoughton, Sharon, Mansfield, Norton, Raynham, West Bridgewater and Bridgewater fire departments. Station coverage was provided by the Brockton and Taunton fire departments.

Easton Police, Easton CERT and Mansfield Emergency Management also assisted at the scene. 

Crews cleared the scene around 11:30 p.m.

“The fire was located in an area where it was difficult for crews to gain access, firefighters also faced challenges with the high heat, humidity and heavy rain,” said Chief Alexander. “I want to thank our firefighters and the several neighboring departments for their assistance in extinguishing the fire quickly and preventing the spread to other condo units.”

The preliminary investigation suggests that the fire was caused by a possible lightning strike. The fire remains under investigation by the Easton Fire Department with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
