Driver injured, transported to New Bedford trauma center, after vehicle crashes into tree

Crews responded early Monday afternoon to a serious crash with injury.

According to the Fire Department, at approximately 1:15 p.m., the Regional Old Colony Communications Center received a 911 call for a motor vehicle crash in the 1100 block of Walnut Plain Road in Rochester with a car into a tree and the driver trapped in the vehicle.

The RFD responded with engine 193, Tanker 198, car 190 and 206 and Ambulance 210 to the scene.

Electric powered rescue tools had to be used to gain access to the patient who was trapped inside the vehicle. Otherwise known as the jaws of life, the electric spreader and cutter tools were utilized, and the driver was extricated from the vehicle in minutes.

The operator of the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital Trauma Center in New Bedford with non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Rochester Police Department.
