A man unaffiliated with Bridgewater State University is facing attempted murder charges after a car struck two students on campus Saturday morning, the university said.

In a message to the campus community, the Office of the President said one student suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and remained in the hospital. The second student had only minor injuries.

Bridgewater State University Police arrested the driver at the scene on Burrill Avenue near the Moakley Center and took him for a psychiatric evaluation. Campus police are leading the investigation, with the Bridgewater Police Department assisting on the crash reconstruction.

The driver, who was only identified as a man in his early 40s from East Weymouth, is being charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, two counts of Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, one count of Leaving the Scene of Personal Injury, and a Marked-Lanes Violation. The university said video shows he intentionally drove toward the students.

Officials said there is no evidence he was targeting those students. They said he had been involved in an earlier road-rage incident in East Bridgewater.

The university said campus police are in contact with and supporting the students’ families.
