Driver arrested in Somerset after multiple crashes, allegedly pointing gun at another driver
Police have issued an update after incidents in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
According to a release by Newport Police, on Monday, shortly after 8:00 a.m., “Newport Police officers responded to the area of the rotary after reports of an armed carjacking at the Shaw’s Supermarket in Middletown, Rhode Island. The suspect was driving a stolen white Jeep SUV, which fled toward Newport.
“Dispatch reported the stolen Jeep was subsequently involved in a motor vehicle accident with disabling damage near the rotary at Admiral Kalbfus Road. Multiple witnesses reported that the suspect brandished a handgun and pointed it at several motorists before fleeing on foot toward The Admiralty, at 195 Admiral Kalbfus Road. The suspect pointed the handgun at a driver and occupant leaving The Admiralty, at which point they exited their vehicle, and he stole a second vehicle, a gray Toyota Highlander.
“A Be On the Lookout (BOLO) alert was broadcast to law enforcement across Rhode Island and surrounding communities in Massachusetts.
“The suspect vehicle was later spotted traveling northbound through island communities and the suspect was later apprehended in Somerset, Massachusetts.
“Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating this incident.”
PD stated that they will release further details as they become available.
