Driver allegedly using cellphone while driving leads to gun and other charges in Bristol County
RAYNHAM — Chief David LaPlante reports that the Raynham Police Department arrested a Boston man on gun and ammunition charges as a result of an investigation that stemmed from a motor vehicle stop on Tuesday afternoon.
At just after 12:45 p.m., a Raynham Police officer conducting routine traffic enforcement stopped a vehicle near 362 New State Highway after observing the vehicle’s operator, later identified as 35-year-old Johnson Prevot of Boston, allegedly using his cellphone in violation of the state’s hands-free law.
Through an on-scene investigation, officers determined that Prevot’s license to operate a motor vehicle was suspended and he was placed under arrest.
During the initial encounter with Prevot, officers observed that he was wearing a fanny pack, but when they placed him under arrest, it had been removed from his person, leading officers to believe his actions were suspicious. Upon searching the vehicle, officers located the fanny pack, which allegedly contained loose ammunition. During an ensuing search of the car, officers allegedly located a loaded firearm and a ski mask.
Prevot did not have a license to carry the firearm.
He was arrested and charged with Possession of a Firearm without a License, Possession of a Loaded Firearm Without a License, Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card, Operating a Motor Vehicle With a Suspended License, and Use of an Electronic Device While Operating a Motor Vehicle
Prevot is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Taunton District Court.
