District Attorney issues update after exchange of gunfire between police and suspect leaves multiple people injured in Plymouth County
The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office is investigating a non-fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Brockton early this morning, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz announced.
At approximately 2:15 a.m., two Brockton police officers on patrol in the same cruiser pursued a 2025 white Lexus. The chase ended when the Lexus spun out at the intersection of Moraine and Spring Streets. The 44-year-old male operator and lone occupant of the vehicle exited the Lexus and immediately began firing at the officers over the roof of his car. Both officers returned fire, striking the suspect once in the shoulder.
During the exchange of gunfire, a 71-year-old man who was sleeping inside a nearby home on Moraine Street was grazed in the arm by a stray round and called 911. Both the suspect and the 71-year-old resident were transported to Boston Medical Center – South in Brockton with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was later transferred to a Boston hospital for further treatment. The two Brockton officers were taken to South Shore Hospital as a precaution.
A handgun with an obliterated serial number was recovered on the ground in front of 115 Moraine Street.
The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
The Plymouth County State Police Detective Unit is leading the investigation, with assistance from the MSP Crime Scene Services Section, Firearms Identification Section, Collision Reconstruction and Analysis Section, and the MSP Chemist.
