Diman student receives national recognition for life-saving actions at Fall River restaurant

FALL RIVER, MA – Ten first responders nationwide will be honored during National First Responders Day at Times Square in New York City on Monday, October 28.

According to Diman Regional, one of those honored is Ben Courville, a Diman sophomore and carpentry student.

The Dighton Fire Department stated in late June that Dighton Junior Firefighters candidate Ben Courville, while out to dinner at the Fall River 99 Restaurant with his mom Christine Courville, noticed that a girl was choking.

Ben, who is from Somerset, approached the girl and asked if she was choking. She nodded her head yes and Ben performed the Heimlich Maneuver on her and dislodged the obstruction.

The girl’s mom was extremely thankful for Ben’s actions. Ben’s mother, and the Dighton Fire Department were also proud.

“The Dighton Junior Firefighters and the Dighton Fire Department are extremely PROUD of your actions today, Ben Courville. Notifications like this is what makes the time and effort that ALL of the Dighton Junior Firefighters Instructors devote to these young men and women well worth it.”

On Monday, Ben will proudly receive the Junior First Responder award from the First Responders Children’s Foundation . He’ll stand alongside nine other incredible first responders and meet with the New York Police Department and the New York Fire Department.
