Detention of Brazilian undocumented immigrant in Massachusetts with prior arrests sparks multiple protests

An arrest in Massachusetts has sparked multiple protests in the Bay State.
According to multiple reports, on Thursday, Ferreira de Oliveira, a Brazilian woman, was detained by ICE in Worcester on Eureka Street.
de Oliveira was identified by the Department of Homeland Security as an undocumented immigrant who entered the U.S. in August 2022 and had prior arrests for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault on a pregnant victim.
The arrest sparked a chaotic scene, with over 30 people, including neighbors and Worcester City Councilor Etel Haxhiaj, attempting to intervene. A minor holding a newborn and a 38-year-old protester, who is running for Worcester School Committee, Ashley Spring, were also arrested.
Spring was released on personal recognizance.
DHS accused Haxhiaj of inciting chaos, while community protests on May 9 and 11 demanded transparency and de Oliveira’s release, with some calling ICE’s actions excessive.
de Oliveira’s whereabouts are currently unknown.
