Early this morning, at approximately 2:17 a.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Middleboro responded to reports of a crash on Route 24 southbound, near mile-marker 26 in West Bridgewater.

Upon arrival, Trooper Nicholas Lorenco discovered that a 2014 Chevrolet Cruz, driven by Dwayne Williams, 46, of Taunton, had crashed into the rear of a Isuzu box truck, driven by a 71-year-old Whitman man.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the Isuzu box truck had just began merging from the breakdown lane, into the first travel lane, in front of the Chevrolet Cruz, at a much lower speed. Williams was unable to slow enough without colliding with the box truck. Williams was initially trapped in the vehicle, and extricated by West Bridgewater and Bridgewater Fire Departments. Williams was determined to be deceased at the scene, as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Isuzu sustained minor injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton.

During the incident, the right two travel lanes were closed, with all assets clearing at approximately 4:00 a.m.

The remaining facts and circumstances of the crash are currently under investigation by troopers from the Middleboro Barracks. Troop D Headquarters, State Police Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS), State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section (CARS), troopers assigned to the State Police Detective Unit of Plymouth County, West Bridgewater Fire Department, Bridgewater Fire Department, and Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MADOT) all assisted on scene.

If any charges are deemed appropriate for the driver of the Isuzu, those will be filed when the investigation is complete.
