Department of Children, Youth & Families announce death of 1 1/2-year-old; neglect a factor

Officials say that an infant child from Rhode Island has died, at least in part, due to neglect.

The Department of Children, Youth & Families has disclosed the fatality of a 1.5-year-old infant from Cranston.

The Department stated that they had no previous involvement with the family.

The incident occurred on January 19, 2023. The Department initiated an investigation and through this investigation, determined neglect contributed to the fatality.

Pursuant to state law, DCYF has notified the Office of the Child Advocate of the report.

Due to confidentiality laws, DCYF is prohibited from sharing additional information.

Rhode Islanders are required by law to report known or suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to DCYF within 24 hours of becoming aware of such abuse/neglect.
