DEM officials identify man found dead in Newport waters
PROVIDENCE, RI – Officials have released the name of a man found dead in Newport on Wednesday.
According to Michael Healey, Chief Public Affairs Officer at Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the Rhode Island DEM is identifying Rui Resendes, 56, of East Providence as the decedent in yesterday’s incident.
The Newport Fire Department recovered a man’s body and an overturned kayak in the waters off Price Neck at around 9:00 a.m. yesterday.
The cause of death is not known at this time and will be determined by the Medical Examiners’ Office.
He was not wearing a life jacket at the time. Resendes was an avid recreational fisherman who frequently kayaked in the area.
Friends and family of Resendes were coming to grips with the sudden loss of someone so close to them.
DEM thanked the partnership of the Newport Fire Department and Police Department and the United States Coast Guard all of whom assisted in the investigation in addition to extending sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Resendes.
