Debate for Candidates running for State Rep in 8th Bristol to be held Tuesday
The New Bedford Ward 1 Association and New Bedford City Councilor Leo Choquette are hosting a debate for the candidates running for the open State Representative seat for the 8th Bristol District and all are invited to attend.
The 8th Bristol district includes the communities of Acushnet, Fall River, Freetown, New Bedford and Westport but organizers encourage everyone to attend. The event will be held on Tuesday, October 8th from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Casimir Pulaski School, 1097 Bradley Road, New Bedford. This is a free event.
Democratic Incumbent Paul Schmid III, who has held the seat since 2011, has decided not to run for re-election. There are five candidates vying for the seat:
Republican Christopher Thrasher
Democrat Steven Ouellette
Unenrolled Laura Hadley
Unenrolled Manuel Soares Jr.
Unenrolled Jesse St. Gelais
At this time, it is believed that all candidates aside from Hadley will be participating in the debate.
In another local district, 5th Bristol incumbent, Democrat Patricia Haddad has refused to debate her opponent, Republican Justin Thurber, despite multiple requests to do so. Haddad has been the representative for the that district since 2000.
