Daughter found dead, mother found with self-inflicted lacerations in Rhode Island home

CRANSTON, RI – The Cranston Police Department is investigating the sudden death of a 21-year-old woman at a residence located at 51 Kingwood Avenue.

According to police, on Monday at just after 8:30 a.m., the Cranston Police Department received a 911 call from the property’s owner and landlord. The caller reported entering the first-floor apartment to investigate water leaking into the basement apartment. Upon entering, he located the 62-year-old female tenant in a bedroom suffering from what appear to be self-inflicted lacerations.

Cranston Police officers and Cranston Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and immediately rendered medical aid. The 62-year-old woman was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she is currently listed in stable condition.

While conducting a protective sweep of the residence, officers discovered a 21-year-old deceased woman in a separate bedroom. The cause and manner of her death were not immediately apparent.

Investigators have determined that the deceased woman was the daughter of the injured 62-year-old woman. The two were the sole occupants of the first-floor apartment.

A court-authorized search warrant was subsequently obtained, and members of the Cranston Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation are conducting a methodical search of the residence. Investigators from the Rhode Island Office of the State Medical Examiners have also responded to the scene and will take custody of the deceased for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

The investigation by the Cranston Police Department Special Investigations Unit remains active. At this time, investigators cannot confirm that foul play was involved, nor do they believe there is any threat to public safety.
