An arrest has been made after a standoff this morning in Dartmouth led to a heavy police presence.

According to Dartmouth Police, at approximately 5:07 a.m., members of the Dartmouth Police Department responded to Fenton Street after receiving a call about several males fighting.

Fenton Street leads to the Dartmouth Commons Shopping Center that contains Target, Starbucks, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Petco, Famous Footwear, and Michaels.

Upon arrival, officers learned that one of the males had barricaded himself inside of the residence with a firearm that he allegedly brandished during the altercation.

After several unsuccessful attempts were made to have the man exit the residence, the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit was requested.

After extended negotiations with the man, he exited without incident.

The man, subsequently identified as Derrick Paine, 40, of Fenton Street, Dartmouth, was placed under arrest, and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a firearm without a license. In addition, Paine also had an outstanding warrant for motor vehicle offenses.

The investigation is still ongoing.

According to Dartmouth Chief of Police Brian P. Levesque, “I am extremely pleased that there were no injuries as a result of this man’s foolish and careless actions. I applaud the actions of every officer involved in this incident, as it could have ended much differently.”
