Dartmouth, MA – A local man is accused of crashing a stolen vehicle after fleeing from police over the weekend.

According to Dartmouth Police, on Saturday, at approximately 2:15 p.m., members of the Dartmouth Police Department responded to the area of 576 High Hill Road for a reported single motor vehicle crash involving a gray Dodge Charger, where the operator subsequently fled the scene on foot.

While responding to the scene, Freetown Police contacted the department and advised that they had just attempted to stop the Dodge Charger in their town, but the operator refused to stop for their officers. Further investigation revealed that the Charger had been previously reported stolen out of the City of New Bedford.

Dartmouth Police officers set up a perimeter and searched the area of the crash, and the operator of the Charger, 20-year-old Evan Gonzalez, was located and taken into custody without incident by Detectives Matthew Desrosiers and Matthew Correia.

Gonzalez was transported to an area hospital for the treatment of minor injuries due to the motor vehicle crash.

Upon his release from the hospital, Gonzalez was processed at Dartmouth Police Headquarters and later transported to the Ash Street House of Correction to await bail.

At Monday’s arraignment, Gonzalez pled not guilty and was released on personal recognizance with a pretrial hearing schedule for May 19th.

Gonzlez was charged by the Dartmouth Police with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, leaving the scene of property damage, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, and speeding.
