Heartbreaking news has been announced concerning the unexpected death of a young Fall River area child.

According to Scott Holcomb, Superintendent of Schools in Swansea, Mason Stringer, a Grade 2 student at Gardner Elementary School in Ms. Robinson’s classroom, passed away unexpectedly.

“We hold Mason’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and all who loved him close in our thoughts and hearts during this time of profound loss.

“The death of a child touches us in different ways. It can leave us feeling heartbroken and confused as we navigate the emotions that come with grief. Each person, child and adult alike, will grieve in their own way and in their own time. Please know that whatever you or your child may be feeling is a natural response to such a loss.”

Holcomb stated that “in the days ahead, additional therapeutic and counseling supports will be available at Gardner Elementary School, where school counselors, adjustment counselors, and other trained professionals will be present to offer care, comfort, and a listening ear to any student or staff member in need. These same supports will also be available at Brown Elementary School, where Mason’s brother attends. Across the district, support will be offered to anyone who may need it, as we recognize that many members of our school community may be impacted. Families are encouraged to reach out to their school if they feel their child would benefit from additional assistance.”

“Many families may also be wondering how to speak with children about death and loss, Holcomb said. “The following resources offer thoughtful, age-appropriate guidance that may be helpful as you navigate these conversations at home:

● Good Grief: Offers age-appropriate guidance for talking with children about death, grief
reactions to expect, and ways to support children through loss.
● National Alliance for Children’s Grief: Provides articles and caregiver toolkits focused on
helping children cope with grief.
● Sesame Street in Communities – Grief: Offers child-friendly language, videos, and activities
designed to help young children understand and express feelings related to loss.
As you talk with children, it can be helpful to:
● Use simple, honest, and age-appropriate language.
● Let them know that feelings of sadness, confusion, or even uncertainty are all okay.
● Reassure them that they are safe, loved, and cared for.
● Invite questions and understand that these conversations may continue over time.

Holcomb concluded that “out of respect for the Stringer family’s privacy, we ask that you hold them in your thoughts and hearts while honoring their need for space as they grieve.”

“We are a deeply caring and connected community. In moments like this, our compassion, kindness, and willingness to support one another matter more than ever. Thank you for holding one another with care during this difficult time.”

A cause of death was not released.
