Community coming together to help Fall River family that lost pets, possessions in blaze that displaced 6
A Fall River family is beginning to pick up the pieces after a fire destroyed their home and killed two of their beloved pets.
According to the department, on Wednesday, at approximately 6:00 p.m., the Fall River Fire Department was dispatched to a blaze at 32 Dussault Street, a three-family home.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the building and worked quickly to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading further through the structure.
Crews searched the building to make sure everyone had made it out safely. No residents were found inside. One cat was rescued during the search, though a dog and a second cat sadly did not survive the fire. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.
Six residents from the building were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist them with immediate needs.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.
According to a friend of the family, the surviving cat is at Bay State Vet in an oxygen cage but, he is struggling.
Community members have begun donating to various Venmo accounts and a GoFundMe fundraiser to help with the fire and vet expenses for the surviving cat.
The Fall River Fire Department thanked its personnel for their quick response and extended its support to the families affected by this incident. Residents are reminded to test their smoke detectors regularly and to have a home escape plan in place.
