Community comes together for family of Cape Cod woman hit by vehicle in pedestrian collision

Community members have raised thousands of dollars for a seriously injured Cape Cod woman described as an “incredibly selfless person that has positively influenced countless lives.”
Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department announced that just before 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday they responded to the Town of Barnstable Transfer Station, located at 45 Flint Street, for a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.
An adult patient sustained serious injuries and received immediate treatment on scene before being transported by ambulance to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth. There, the patient was transferred to a Boston MedFlight helicopter and flown to a Level 1 trauma center in Boston for further care.
Dawn Capra of West Barnstable was reportedly removing trash from her vehicle when she was hit by the car.
According to a GoFundMe fundraiser that has raised nearly $60,000 as of this writing, Capra has undergone several surgeries after suffering severe lower body injuries.
The fundraiser, which was created by family, touched on the type of person Capra is.
“For those who do not know her personally, first she is a mother. After raising five kids of her own into adulthood, she has opened her home and heart to many children in need of a foster home. Three foster children now call her mom officially, after being adopted into our ever-growing family. Second, Dawn is a longstanding cheerleading coach. Establishing Cape All Stars in 1996, now known as Cape Cod Cheer Academy, she has created a place for thousands of kids to learn, grow, and have a place of safety and belonging.”
The incident is currently under investigation by the Barnstable Police Department.
