TIVERTON, RI – The cause of a blaze that destroyed a local structure has been determined.

According to the department, shortly after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Tiverton Fire Department responded to the area of 532 Neck Road for a reported large brush fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a large barn fully involved behind 560 Neck Road. Crews initiated suppression operations and brought the fire under control in a short period of time. The fire was confined to the barn, preventing extension to the surrounding property.

Based on fire conditions upon arrival, investigators determined that the barn had been burning for an extended period before it was discovered and reported.

No civilian or firefighter injuries.

At the time of the incident, severe weather was moving through the area, producing heavy rain, thunder, and frequent lightning. The fire was investigated by the Tiverton Fire Marshal in conjunction with Rhode Island State Fire Marshal investigators. The cause of the fire was determined to be a direct lightning strike to the barn.

Due to the lack of hydrants in the South Tiverton area, a mutual aid tanker was requested from the Little Compton Fire Department . The Portsmouth Fire Department assisted by supplying water from the dry hydrant located on Neck Road. Additionally, Fall River and Middletown Fire Departments provided station coverage for the Town of Tiverton during the incident.

The Tiverton Fire Department thanked their mutual aid partners for their assistance.
