Capitol Police recruit who died after a training exercise is being remembered as State Police investigate
As friends and loved ones are grieving a sudden loss during the holidays, authorities are investigating what caused his untimely death.
The Rhode Island State Police is investigating the death of a Capitol Police recruit, identified as Kyron Lopes, age 27, of Providence.
Lopes passed away on December 25, 2025, after being transported by ambulance from a Capitol Police training exercise on December 23, 2025.
Cameron Borges, Director of Operations for the Holy Cross football team, gave a glimpse into the type of person Lopes was as they were both teammates on the LaSalle football team.
“Losing a teammate is never easy. This game is the ultimate brotherhood, and because of it, you meet people and form bonds you’d never have otherwise.
“Kyron was a big brother to so many of us younger guys. He was a talented football player, but even more than that, he was an even better person. I was blessed to share the field with him, to block for him, and later to have the privilege of being coached by him. Those are memories I’ll always carry with me.
“Kyron always had a smile around me. He always believed in me. He was always proud of me. One thing that will forever stick with me is how he consistently checked in—he genuinely cared, and that meant more than he probably ever knew.
“I appreciate him deeply. He’s a hell of a brother, and this loss is truly tragic. My prayers are with his family and everyone who loved him during this incredibly difficult time.
“I hope number 1 is doing his thing on the football field in heaven.”
The results of the medical examiner tests are pending, and the investigation is ongoing.
