A retired nurse from Cape Cod killed in a multi-vehicle highway crash is being remembered.

According to Matthew Demlein from Virginia State Police, the department is investigating a fatal five-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday just after 5:30 p.m. in the Thru Lanes of Interstate 495 westbound, near 176-mile marker.

A Lexus sedan was stopped in traffic when it was struck in the right rear of the vehicle by a Dodge Ram.  The impact led the Lexus to run into the back of a Ford F-150 that was also stopped in traffic.  The Ram, meanwhile, went airborne after striking the Lexus and struck the F-150, as well as a GMC Savana and a Nissan Rogue.  The Ram eventually came to rest on its side.

A passenger in the Lexus, 69-year-old Lauren Johnson-Lavender, died at the scene.

Three other individuals in the crash also suffered injuries and were transported to area hospitals.

Charges are pending.

Friends say that Johnson-Lavender, who was from Mashpee, was a beacon of light who loved pickleball and had a warm, fun, and welcoming personality.

Services have yet to be announced.

The crash remains under investigation.
