Cape Cod blaze claims the life of pet dog, pet cat survives, fire department says
Officials say that a pet died in a Cape Cod fire over the weekend.
According to the fire department, on Saturday at just past 9:00 p.m., the Mashpee Fire Department received a 911 call from the residents of 252 Main St., reporting a fire on their rear deck that was spreading into the home. Upon arrival, fire crews found an enclosed deck fully engulfed in smoke and flames. The fire had also extended into the kitchen of the house. All occupants were able to evacuate safely; however, a dog and a cat were unaccounted for.
A working fire assignment was called and crews from Cotuit, Sandwich, COMM and Joint Base Fire Departments assisted either at the scene or station coverage. The Mashpee Police Department was also on the scene assisting us, as they always do.
Initial fire crews successfully contained the fire to the rear deck area and the interior kitchen. However, there was significant smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the home.
During the initial search, the owner’s dog was found but unfortunately did not survive the incident. Later, during the overhaul phase, the owner’s cat was discovered alive and was returned to its owner.
There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters during the incident.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is currently under investigation by the Mashpee Fire Department.
