WEST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Timothy Nixon reports that the West Bridgewater Police Department arrested and charged a Brockton man with driving a stolen vehicle. The suspect had an active warrant from Stoughton Police for his arrest.

On Sunday, at just before 2:00 a.m., West Bridgewater Police Officer Brian C. Smith Jr. was on patrol in the center of town when he ran the license plate of a vehicle stopped at a red light. A Registry of Motor Vehicles query returned a stolen license plate.

Officer Smith watched the vehicle pick up another man who was walking in the area. He then conducted a motor vehicle stop near 31 South Main St. and requested backup. Officers Daniel Sullivan and Richard Flaherty responded.

Through an on-scene investigation, police determined that the license plates were reported stolen out of Brockton on Dec. 13. The vehicle’s VIN matched a car that was stolen from Stoughton on Dec. 2.

The driver repeatedly refused to provide his real identity, but through their investigation, police were able to identify him as 32-year-old Elvis Andrade of Brockton. During a search, police located a screwdriver and several items and paperwork in various people’s names, including passports, debit and credit cards, and IDs.

Officers also determined that Stoughton Police had obtained an arrest warrant for Andrade on Dec. 24 following an investigation into multiple motor vehicle break-ins, car thefts, and credit card fraud. Andrade had five active arrest warrants.

Andrade was arrested and charged with Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Burglarious Instrument, Receiving Stolen Property Under $1,200, Motor Vehicle Operator Refusing to Identify Self, Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License, Number Plate Violation to Conceal ID, and Refusing to Identify Self.

Andrade was arraigned Monday in Brockton District Court where he pled not guilty and was held on $1,000 cash bail.

His next scheduled court appearance is a pretrial hearing on January 23rd.
