Bristol County zoo announces passing of lion that captured the hearts of the community
The Capron Park Zoo has announced the death of their 20-year-old female African Lion, Nyalla.
Nyalla, born in November of 2004, was brought to the zoo in July of 2005 along with her sister, Kayla. Ramses, our resident male lion, was introduced to the sisters shortly after. Together these three captured the hearts of the community, animal care staff, and guests near and far.
Nyalla, Kayla, and Ramses all received regular check-ups throughout their care here at Capron Park Zoo. In 2014, both Nyalla and Kayla showed signs of kidney concerns. Later exams also showed signs of arthritis for both females and sadly in 2020, Kayla passed due to chronic kidney disease. Despite her sister’s death, Nyalla continued to do well with her health concerns.
Last month staff began to note her activity was decreasing, but she was still eating regularly and able to move about her enclosure. On December 31st, staff observed Nyalla’s behavior was atypical during morning checks and placed her under continuous observation throughout the day. Nyalla passed naturally that afternoon with staff present. A complete necropsy to determine cause of death will be performed by Veterinary officials.
Although the staff is feeling the immeasurable loss of Nyalla, they take pride in knowing the level of care she received that allowed her to live well beyond her expected years.
They continue to closely monitor Ramses in her absence and ensure to give him the same elevated care for the remainder of his life at Capron Park Zoo.
