Bristol County man sentenced to prison in Fall River for killing father, seriously injuring stepmother
A Bristol County man who was convicted of stabbing his father to death and then stabbing his stepmother was sentenced to prison in Fall River Superior Court.
38-year-old Gary Bergantim of Norton was convicted of first-degree murder and assault with intent to murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
Officers arrived on the morning of February 7th on Cohannet Street in Taunton and found two people stabbed. Gary’s father, 60-year-old Jorge Bergantim, and his stepmother Lucia Bergantim. Both were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Jorge died on February 10th. Lucia survived; however, she still deals with the effects of those injuries.
Gary was later arrested by police in a Norton parking lot.
According to ABC6, a statement was read in court on behalf of Lucia saying that Gary stole the normalcy, peace, and ability to function from her life and asked for the maximum sentence, fearing he would try to kill her if he was freed.
Gary is currently held at Bridgewater State Hospital and could remain in psychiatric care for the remainder of his sentence.
