Bristol County man facing list of charges, pled not guilty, held on bail, after fleeing from police
A Bristol County man pled not guilty and is being held on bail after facing a list of charges.
According to police, on Friday, at just before 1:15 p.m., Marion Police responded to Abels Way after a resident reported that a man was seen on the home’s Ring Doorbell stealing a lawn trimmer and leaving in a white pickup truck.
A short time later, two Marion Police officers noticed a vehicle matching that description on Mill Street (Route 6) near the Marion Police Department.
Sgt. Larry Savery attempted to stop the vehicle, but the pickup truck fled south on Front Street at a high rate of speed. Sgt. Savery stopped pursuing the truck due to safety concerns.
Police then observed the pickup truck after it had crashed in the Silvershell Beach parking lot. The driver, later identified as 56-year-old Peter Soares of Seekonk, attempted to run away.
Sgt. Savery and Sgt. Sean Day took Soares into custody as he ran toward the water.
Soares was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, then released and brought to the Marion Police Department for booking.
Through an investigation, police determined that Soares had entered the house and a shed and had stolen additional property.
Soares was charged with Breaking and Entering During the Daytime with Intent to Commit a Felony, Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Stop for Police, Operating a Motor Vehicle to Endanger, Speeding, Marked Lanes Violation, and Disorderly Conduct.
He was arraigned Monday in Wareham District Court where he pled not guilty and was held on $2,000 cash bail.
Soares next scheduled court appearance is a pretrial hearing on January 21st.
“Thanks to the homeowner who quickly reported suspicious activity on their camera, officers were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle, ultimately leading to a prompt arrest in this case,” Marion Police Chief Richard Nighelli said. “I would like to commend responding officers for their quick thinking in not engaging in a high-speed pursuit in the midst of an already dangerous situation. The actions of the homeowner and officers led to a desired outcome without any injuries.”
