Bristol County District Attorney’s Office identifies fisherman who died after water incident in New Bedford

A man who died in local waters has been identified by officials.

According to NBFD, on Sunday at approximately 6:00 p.m., the New Bedford Fire Department was dispatched for an individual that had jumped into the water from a boat and had not resurfaced.

Marine 38, staffed by members of Engine 1 and Ladder 1, responded and confirmed the report of a male who had entered the water from a fishing vessel berthed at Fish Island, southwest of Norpel Fish Co.

Upon arrival, Marine 38 assisted the New Bedford Police Department with a coordinated vessel and water search in and around the reported area. NBPD deployed two divers, who located and recovered the male after several minutes.

Fire personnel assisted with removing the victim from the water and transferring him onto the NBPD vessel. Fire personnel immediately initiated CPR and packaged the patient in a Stokes basket while New Bedford Emergency Medical Services initiated advanced life support procedures.

The patient was transferred from the NBPD vessel to the awaiting NBEMS ambulance for continued medical treatment and transport and later died.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, the deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Mitchell Klouw of Missouri.  

Klouw’s social media profile states he was a fisherman.

Foul play is not suspected.
