Bombshell statements made in Karen Read hearing; Defense makes motion for dismissal of murder charges
DEDHAM, MA – Seemingly derailed by the arraignments, subsequent bail revocation and incarceration of Aidan Kearney, the Karen Read trial was back on track today with the defense offering up staggering statements in a hearing to dismiss the murder charge that have sent Read supporters into a frenzy.
If you are unfamiliar with the case of Karen Read, you can find the most in-depth coverage of this case here. Full disclosure, it’ll take you quite some time.
At a hearing today in Norfolk Superior Court, defense attorney Alan Jackson argued their motion for dismissal of a second degree murder charge for the death of Read’s boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe. Judge Beverley Cannone allowed Jackson ten minutes to make his case for dismissal. It was during that time Jackson finally shared parts of an over 3,000 page investigation by Federal investigators who began digging into the investigation surrounding the case last year, highlighting parts that many believe prove Read is innocent.
Some of the most jaw-dropping disclosures today included that the FBI hired an accident re-constructionist who determined that O’Keefe’s injuries were not consistent with being hit by a vehicle and that the documented damage to Read’s Lexus is also inconsistent with hitting O’Keefe. The prosecution has maintained that Read dropped O’Keefe off at the home of police officer Brian Albert after a night of drinking and backed up into O’Keefe, leaving him in the cold to die.
Another long debated part of the case was witness Jennifer McCabe’s 2:27 AM Google search “hos (how) long to die in cold”. Prosecutors maintained that the timestamp of the search was incorrect. However, Jackson shared today that an FBI expert determined the search did indeed take place at 2:27 AM.
Further arguments for dismissal included that the police officer investigating the crime, Michael Proctor concealed his relationship with witnesses in the case and that District Attorney Michael Morrisey gave permission for witnesses in the case to destroy their phones.
Kearney, the independent journalist who has found himself wrapped up in the case after being the first to delve into it, reported on additional points of interest in the hearing today. Kearney himself is back in court this Thursday, facing new charges related to intimidation of a witness in the Read case.
Judge Cannone did NOT give a ruling on the motion to dismiss today and took the matter under advisement. Should she rule against the dismissal, Karen Read will be in court on April 16th for the start of her murder trial.
