Big Y supermarket chain opening two new locations soon on the South Coast; here is what we know
Springfield, MA – Big Y Foods, Inc., one of New England’s largest independently owned supermarket chains, today announced plans to open two new stores in southeastern Massachusetts, repurposing former big-box retail spaces in North Dartmouth and Fairhaven.
The new North Dartmouth location will occupy the former Christmas Tree Shops space at Faunce Corner Center, while the Fairhaven store will transform the shuttered Big Lots at Fairhaven Plaza. Both sites are expected to undergo renovations to align with Big Y’s family-friendly model, featuring expanded fresh produce sections, in-house bakeries, delis, and sustainable energy-efficient designs. Construction timelines are pending local approvals, with openings targeted for spring 2026, creating an estimated 150-200 jobs combined.
“These new stores will serve as vital community hubs in North Dartmouth and Fairhaven, offering quality groceries and supporting local families,” said Big Y President & CEO Charles D’Amour. “We’re excited to breathe new life into these spaces and continue our growth in Massachusetts, where we now operate over 75 supermarkets.”
Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D’Amour in Chicopee, MA, Big Y employs more than 10,000 associates across Massachusetts and Connecticut. Ranked No. 73 on Progressive Grocer’s 2025 PG 100 list, the chain emphasizes fresh, local products and community involvement.
