A Fall River legend is gone.

According to multiple reports, Liberal Silva has passed away.

Silva was born in 1941 in the Azores, Portugal. He immigrated to the United States and has resided in Fall River for decades, becoming successful in business, philanthropy, and community endeavors.

In 1974, Liberal Silva purchased Frisco’s Asphalt in Fall River. The company performed small residential driveway paving projects and later expanded into utility construction and public-sector work. In 1996, his son Dan Silva took over day-to-day operations and renamed the business Century Paving & Construction Corp., which continues as a family-owned company today.

Saying Silva has been active in the local Portuguese-American community in Fall River is an understatement. In 2015, he served as Honorary President of the Day of Portugal celebration, where he participated in raising the Portuguese flag during the opening ceremony. He has also been involved in other community events and organizations, including leadership roles with local Portuguese groups for decades and left his mark on St. Anthony of Padua Church.

When an organization, Portuguese function, or church needed some help, he always seemed to be there.

He universally has been described as a great man, and a gentleman who would help anyone.

Word began to spread Monday evening of Silva’s passing.

Carlos Cesar also reflected on the loss.

“I am sad with the news of the passing of my friend Liberal Silva. Fall River and especially the Portuguese community lost a big supporter. R.I.P my friend and forever you will be the Bedford Street Mayor.”

Services for Silva have not yet been announced.
