Baseball standout at Bridgewater State University left partially paralyzed after accident
PEABODY/LYNN, MA — Cameron Connolly, a standout baseball player from Peabody and current student-athlete at Bridgewater State University, suffered a severe spinal injury early Sunday morning after falling backward from a porch on campus. The accident has left him paralyzed from the waist down, marking a profound and life-changing event for the young athlete known for his determination and athletic prowess.
Connolly was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he underwent emergency spinal surgery and has remained in intensive care. The injury, described as traumatic and affecting his central nervous system, has resulted in lower-body paralysis, necessitating the use of a wheelchair and other accommodations as he adapts to a “new normal.” Fortunately, the damage spared his head, brain, and upper body; he retains full strength and mobility above the waist, along with clear speech and communication abilities.
Following his stabilization, Connolly is set to transfer to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, where he will undergo intensive therapy to relearn essential functions typically performed with the lower body. Despite the challenges, those close to him emphasize his exceptional physical conditioning and unwavering resolve, with his primary goal being to walk again—a target they believe he will achieve through relentless effort and support.
The outpouring from the community has been described by the family as overwhelming, with friends, family from the Peabody and Lynn areas, and members of the BSU baseball team rallying around Connolly. Visitors have been encouraged to continue reaching out via calls or texts, and coordinated visits during his rehabilitation are welcomed to boost his spirits amid the demanding schedule ahead.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has raised over $45,000 as of this writing.
