on

A bear was reportedly spotted today in Bristol County in an area where there were homes.

According to police, the Dighton Police Department has received a recent report of black bear sightings in a residential area in town.

While these animals typically avoid people, it’s important to take precautions to keep yourself, your family, pets, and the bears safe.

Please follow these important guidelines:

What To Do If You See a Bear in Dighton:

1. Stay Calm – Do Not Approach

If you spot a bear, remain calm. Slowly back away while keeping the bear in sight. Do not run or attempt to scare it off.

2. Secure Food, Trash, and Outdoor Items

Bears are often drawn to smells. Store trash indoors or in bear-proof containers, bring in bird feeders, and keep pet food and grills inside when not in use.

3. Supervise Pets and Keep Them Leashed

Keep pets indoors or leashed when outside. Do not let them chase or bark at bears, as this could provoke a dangerous interaction.

4. Avoid Walking Alone at Dawn or Dusk

Bears are most active during these times. Walk in groups and make noise to avoid surprising wildlife.

5. Never Feed Bears or Attempt to Interact

Feeding bears is dangerous and illegal. It causes them to lose their natural fear of humans and can lead to future conflict.

6. Report Sightings Promptly

If you see a bear in your neighborhood, please contact the Dighton Animal Control at (508) 669-6711.
