The search for a missing boy has come to a tragic end.

According to authorities, human remains believed to be that of 5-year-old Elijah Lewis from Merrimack were discovered this morning buried in the ground in a wooded area in Abington, Massachusetts.

Attorney General John M. Formella, New Hampshire State Police Colonel Nathan A. Noyes, and Merrimack Police Chief Brian K. Levesque announced yesterday that there was an ongoing search in the area of Ames Nowell State Park involving the disappearance of Lewis.

The search was being conducted in the area of Chestnut Street in Abington based on information learned in the investigation and was conducted by the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from personnel from the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit.

As previously reported, Elijah’s unknown whereabouts were brought to the attention of authorities by DCYF on Thursday, October 14, 2021. He was believed to have been missing for less than 30 days before his disappearance was brought to the attention of authorities. The Merrimack Police Department immediately began an investigation, and was assisted later that day by the New Hampshire State Police and the New Hampshire Department of Justice. Elijah was never reported missing to authorities prior to this time.

Authorities would not elaborate more on the details involving this case.

Elijah’s mother and a man believed to be her boyfriend were arrested earlier in the week.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine if more charges will be filed.
