As group continues to argue for release of all Bristol County ICE detainees, judge releases 18 immigrants

Eight immigrants were to be released Tuesday from ICE detention under the Bristol County Sheriff’s Department in connection with coronavirus litigation, according to Lawyers for Civil Rights, which filed the lawsuit. LCR stated that the releases bring the total number of immigrants released from ICE custody to 18 since the lawsuit began.

According to LCR, not all of the individuals being released fall within the CDC high-risk categories.

Three individuals have died in correctional facilities in the Commonwealth from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

LCR and the Worker & Immigrant Rights Advocacy Clinic at Yale Law School continue to fight for the release of all immigrants from Bristol County.

According to WBUR, the previous detainees ordered released had no criminal charges or convictions on their records.

U.S. District Court Judge William Young has urged ICE to stop placing new detainees into the Bristol County facilities and wants the population reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Immigrants who are getting released are to be quarantined for 14 days in their home, according to WBUR.

The federal court is considering the release of 10 individuals each day.

The Court has scheduled a hearing via zoom for Thursday, April 9, 2020 at 2:00 p.m.
