Accomplished Massachusetts man who died after boat capsized remembered for kindness, compassion, innovation

An accomplished Massachusetts man is being remembered after a boat was found capsized off of the Massachusetts coast.

According to Massachusetts State Police, at approximately noon at Saturday, members of the State Police Marine Unit and the United States Coast Guard responded to investigate a capsized boat off of Nantasket Beach.

Troopers patrolling the beach along with Hull Police and Fire arrived on scene to search the shoreline. 

First Responders located one unresponsive person in the water and rendered aid, including CPR. 

The deceased has been identified by colleagues as 56-year-old Michael LaRhette of Hingham.

LaRhette was the Chief Business Officer at LabCentral, a biotechnology company in Cambridge.

According to his bio, “prior to LabCentral, LaRhette “was Chief Business Officer, at New Lab with its 140+ member startup companies in residence at their 84,000SF facility in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He also served as President of MassChallenge, Inc, a global network of accelerator programs for early stage startups, headquartered in Boston, MA. Mike helped expand the impact of MassChallenge on a global scale to 7 programs in 5 countries. He drove the revenue, marketing, and talent strategies for the organization, as well as building its community of over 2,000 high impact alumni startup companies.

“Prior to MassChallenge he was a Principal with Collective Next, a collaborative design firm based in Boston. He has also held senior leadership roles at AchieveGlobal, Korn Ferry, Symantec, and Sapient Corporation. He holds an undergraduate degree from Boston College and a Masters from Boston University.”

Chief Executive Officer of LabCentral Maggie O’Toole described LaRhette as “an extraordinary leader whose kindness, compassion, and dedication to innovation in biotech and life sciences shaped LabCentral in immeasurable ways.”

“We are honored to have enjoyed his warmth, kindness and creativity, and will miss his laughter, pranks, and the way he went all in on every LabCentral costume opportunity. To say that he will be missed is the most extraordinary understatement.” 

The matter remains under investigation by the State Police Plymouth County Detective Unit and Crime Scene Services who responded to the scene.
