Swansea Police investigate after elementary school student makes inappropriate joke about weapon
Days after a Swansea high school student reportedly threatened to shoot another student, a younger student reportedly made a comment about a weapon.
In a statement, Elizabeth S. Brown Elementary School in Swansea revealed that a student made an inappropriate comment.
“Today we learned of a situation that occurred Wednesday morning at the E.S. Brown Elementary School.
“A fifth-grade student made an inappropriate joke about a weapon in his backpack. Several students heard the comment, but did not alert school staff.
“A parent reported the incident to the school administration this morning. The School Resource Officer was informed immediately. The student was questioned upon arrival at school, his backpack searched, and the student’s comments were determined to be unfounded.
“Swansea Police conducted an investigation and determined there was no credible threat.
“We ask families to speak with their children about the importance of reporting incidents such as this to school staff immediately.
“Over the next couple school days, we will be having multiple school-wide conversations about the importance of saying something if you see something. Jokes about weapons or violence of any kind will not be tolerated, and discipline will be consistent with the Swansea Public Schools student handbook. “
