Somerset family turning their pain into action with fundraiser after 10-year-old dies from brain cancer
Somerset, MA — Somerset native Selina was a sweet and sassy 5th grader whose bright spirit and courage touched everyone she met.
Selina bravely battled diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a devastating pediatric brain cancer, for eight months before passing away at just 10 years old in 2018.
In the face of unimaginable loss, her parents, Ken and Michelle Oehmen, transformed their pain into purpose by founding the Massachusetts (Somerset) Chapter of The Cure Starts Now. A foundation dedicated to funding pediatric brain cancer research and finding a cure for all cancers.
The Massachusetts (Somerset) Chapter of The Cure Starts Now will be hosting the 5th Annual Bowling for Pediatric Brain Cancer event in loving memory of Oehmen. The family-friendly fundraiser will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 12 PM – 4 PM at AMF Lanes in Somerset (231 Riverside Avenue, Somerset, MA).
Registration is $25 per person and includes three games of bowling plus shoe rental. Guests can also enjoy raffle prizes, t-shirts, and merchandise, with raffle tickets available at $25 in advance online or $30 at the door. Guests who pre-register online will receive a 5-Year Commemorative Pin to celebrate this milestone anniversary event.
Selina was a bright and joyful young girl who loved softball, Girl Scouts, arts and crafts, musical theatre, marching band, playing her cello, and volunteering at her church. Selina dreamed of becoming a scientist or art teacher, and her courage and spirit continue to inspire all who knew her.
All proceeds will benefit pediatric brain cancer research in honor of Selina.
