Freetown Fire Department responds to accidental chemical exposure at Camp Welch
Freetown, MA — According to the department, Tuesday morning, the Freetown Fire Department responded to a reported chemical exposure incident at Camp Welch, located in Assonet. The incident occurred inside the camp’s pool house following an accidental chemical mixture.
Two staff members experienced respiratory irritation due to the exposure and were transported to a local hospital for precautionary evaluation. At no point were campers or additional staff members in any danger. Camp Welch staff acted swiftly and appropriately, following all established safety protocols.
A Tier 1 Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) response was declared, and the Massachusetts State Hazmat Team was requested to assist in assessing and mitigating the chemical situation.
The Freetown Fire Department commended the quick actions taken by Camp Welch staff and appreciated the support of regional emergency response partners.
The situation has been contained, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
