A driver who reportedly fled from police is suffering from major injuries due to a crash.

According to police, on Tuesday, at just after 10:00 p.m., a Falmouth Police Officer observed a white GMC Sierra truck traveling on Old Barnstable Road near Backus River Road with a headlight out. The officer turned around to initiate a stop, but as the cruiser approached, the truck accelerated rapidly.

The officer attempted the stop near Eagle Lane, activating lights and siren. However, the truck continued through the intersection of Old Barnstable Road and Carriage Shop Road without stopping. A nearby patrol unit observed the vehicle, and both units briefly pursued the truck northbound.

The GMC Sierra allegedly disregarded traffic signals, failing to stop at Hayway Road. Shortly after, it lost control, crossed into the opposite lane, and left the roadway, striking a large tree on Old Barnstable Rd. Officers on scene rendered aid and requested emergency assistance from the Falmouth Fire and Rescue Department for life-threatening injuries.

Falmouth Fire and Rescue personnel extricated the driver and transported to the Falmouth Hospital Landing Zone, where the driver was airlifted to an off-Cape trauma center. The driver remains in critical condition.

The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations assisted with scene documentation and crash reconstruction. This incident remains under investigation.

The name of the driver was not released.
