Former Dartmouth police officer convicted of child rape in Fall River court

A former Dartmouth Police officer was convicted Wednesday after a three-day jury trial in Fall River Superior Court of child rape and indecent assault and battery, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

Shawn Souza was convicted by the jury late Wednesday afternoon of two counts of aggravated rape of a child, one count of rape of a child by force and one count of indecent assault and battery of a person 14 or older.

Souza was taken into custody after the conviction was announced and will be sentenced Thursday morning at the Fall River Justice Center.

The trial was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Silvia Rudman and Kalene Kobza.
