Police arrest 23-year-old man after early morning shooting in Fall River
Fall River Police have made an arrest after a Friday morning shooting.
According to Det. Sergeant Moses Pereira, at just after 2:00 a.m., several officers heard what they recognized as the sound of gunshots in the area of Globe Street and South Main Street. As units converged on the area, a male immediately took off running upon seeing the police response. After a short foot pursuit, the male was apprehended by officers.
The male later indicated to officers that a group of unknown individuals had fired several rounds in his direction. He attempted to returned fire at the group, then ran from the area. He stated he discarded the firearm prior to being encountered by the police.
23-year-old Josiah Steward of Fall River was charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license to carry, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and possession of a large capacity firearm.
Officers were able to recover the Glock 27 firearm which was discarded by Steward.
Perreira stated that the arrest is a testament to the diligence, and quick action taken by the men and women of the Uniform Division.
Steward was held without bail Friday pending a dangerousness hearing and has a detention hearing scheduled for next week.
