A teenager has been held on bail after a fatal crash on Cape Cod.

According to Massachusetts State Police, shortly before 7:00 p.m. on Friday, troopers from the State Police Bourne Barracks responded to a multiple-car, fatal crash at the base of the Sagamore Bridge on Route 6 west.

Preliminary information indicates that 19-year-old Paul Myers of Plymouth was driving in the left lane when he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him illegally by shifting into the right lane. While attempting to change lanes, Myers’ vehicle did not have enough clearance and crashed into a Toyota Corolla already traveling in the right lane. As a result of the contact, the Toyota Corolla hit the curb and spun across the median and crashed into a car traveling in the opposite direction.

The head on collision resulted in the death of a 79-year-old woman, Martha Sheldon of Plymouth, who was the passenger of the Toyota Corolla, as well as serious injuries to the 83-year-old, male operator of the same vehicle which according to family is Martha’s husband.

Following the crash, Myers was taken into custody for suspected operating under the influence (drugs).

According to WCVB, when Myers opened the door of his vehicle, Troopers smelled “a strong, fresh odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle” and saw multiple “burnt, marijuana blunts” on the floor of the vehicle.

Myers was held on $10,000 bail and ordered him to surrender his passport and remain drug free. He is also not allowed to drive a vehicle if he posts bail.

Very sad for all involved . That kid made a very bad choice . He will feel this for a very long time . First , the punishment from the courts and our DUI systems (I.e. classes with a high fee , lawyers etc . Then in a few years when that’s done , he can never forget he killed someone . All over a stupid choice . Sad

Everyone talks about DUI’s. Nobody ever talks about marijuana and the effects it has on driving. We have a ton of dispensaries and all involved are getting rich (the owners and the state). No one discusses the ramifications of marijuana use, one of which is driving impairment or what I call DU High. A woman here is dead because a high 19 year old is driving out of control. Until a politician dies nothing will be done….

I agree with your sentiments but be careful of jumping to conclusions – other chemicals besides pot may have been involved so we should be careful of armchair jurying.

Stats for pot smokers and auto accidents lower than Alcohol,

That aside “driving impairment” has a much wider breath of options. It could be alcohol or drugs or even mental impairment brought about by stress. The impairment notion can also just be the officers opinion. This event the officer says they suspects Marijuana by the smell and stuff on the floor.

      I agree
Many accidents are more Marijuana related but not called out because the big wigs are getting rich.

The worst part about all this is that this mf is gonna post bail and what loose his license and remain drug free as his punishment l, good job Massachusetts this kid deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison for taking a woman’s life.

It will never happen. It’s a proven fact if you kill someone with a car in Massachusetts your sentence is minimal.
Whether it involves speed, drugs or alcohol.3 to 5 year sentence. He’ll probably do 2 years tops. Unfortunately that’s just the way it is.

I live by the sagamore bridge and heard the crash . We walked up to the bridge and this young man’s car was at the base of the bridge. He didn’t stop where he caused the accident which was right at the top of the bridge. He continued down to the bottom of the bridge until his car was damaged enough to go no further. What was he thinking, how far would he have gotten if his car was not so damaged? This is an absolute tragedy and I’m so sorry for the families involved.

Actually plenty of people were talking about it back when the push to legalize marijuana was going on…but nobody wanted to hear about it and/or tried saying over and over that such claims that people have been killed because of marijuana impairment were nothing more than lies to prevent legalization. Tell that to the survivors and family members now!

I am so disgusted that this kid is out on bail. This poor woman lost her life and her husband was seriously injured. Their family is forever changed because of the senseless and careless act of an impaired teenager. Even though marijuana is legal, it is still a drug!

As an aside, it’s also illegal to drive with a phone in your hand. WTF are police doing to counter that measure? NOTHING!! So many people, especially kids, drive while talking, texting, watching videos, etc., causing more incidents and accidents.

It is all senseless and preventable!

The problem is that traffic laws are rarely enforced. I see aggressive drivers EVERY day on the streets of Hyannis and on the highway. I don’t think the police are properly funded. They could probably double the force assigned to traffic enforcement and it would still be not enough. Now a lovely woman is dead because this kid has been allowed to drive like this. I’m going to guess it’s not his first time but this time he did some serious damage. I hope he’s tossed in jail and the key is thrown away. But I really hope police get more funding and they become much for vigilant about this kind of driving.

Trying to picture the event as described: So it seems Paul Myers was driving in left lane, (passing lane) car in front not going fast enough for him, he moves to right lane, fails to see if its clear or flat out did not look. Car in right lane side swiped, diverts over grass median into car other car head on. That is the part I do not get. “head on” How does a car travelling in the right lane (curb lane) spin does not hit slower car in left lane but skips by drive through the grass and hits traffic going other direction. Something missing here. I say side swiped near rear because if you hit near the front of that car is can’t go left, has to go right.

Judge terms: hmm what the odds pot head Paul Myers can re-frame from using drugs? I’m thinking not a chance.
