A species of shark rarely seen in this area was spotted late last month.

According to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, an incredible (and rare) smooth hammerhead sighting occurred off Monomoy Island, near Chatham, recently.

Hammerheads typically live in tropical and subtropical coastal waters.

According to The Boston Globe, a hammerhead was located in Massachusetts waters in 2022.

In the 70’s I used to see them at least 3 or 4 times every summer on trips out to Block Island from the Westport or Sakonnet area. Maybe around half way there. Large turtles also I would see both on calm days mostly.
