As officials determine identity of body found in Newport, more details released on how missing swimmer was swept away

As a body is located near where a missing swimmer was last seen, those who knew the young man give some insight into his final moments.

According to United States Coast Guard Northeast, on June 23rd at approximately 6:00 p.m., a 20-year-old swimmer went missing near Newport, RI.

Dexter Gutierrez Matias of East Providence was lost near Brenton Point Park off of Ocean Drive in the rocky area called 12 O’ Clock High.

Coast Guard units searching for Matias included STA Point Judith, STA Castle Hill, CGC Maurice Jester, & Air Station Cape Cod. Newport Police also aided in the effort.

After searching 122 sq. nautical miles, it was announced at approximately 1:30 p.m. on June 24th that the search was suspended, pending further developments.

On Wednesday, July 3rd, the Department of Environmental Management announced a body was located near where Matias went missing leaving hope for his loved ones that he may receive a proper burial.

According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, Matias “was enjoying the day in Newport at the beach with friends. They were helping him become a better swimmer as Dexter wanted to be able to take his young son to the beach and teach him how to swim. As the day went on, the tide had started to come in and the current had changed. As Dexter was standing in knee-deep water, he was swept off his feet by a rip current. His friends tried to help save him, but they were unable to.”

The state medical examiner will determine the identity of the found body and a cause of death.
