Massachusetts State Police respond after homeless man dies after jumping from bridge

Authorities say that a man has died after jumping from a Massachusetts bridge.

According to Dave Procopio of Massachusetts State Police, search teams early Monday afternoon recovered the body of an adult male from the Charles River. Divers made the recovery at approximately 1:50 PM.

The search for the victim began at approximately 11:30 AM, when witnesses reported seeing a man struggling in the water in the area of the Longfellow Bridge. The search for and eventual recovery of the victim was a joint operation by Massachusetts State Police patrols and the MSP Dive Team and Marine Unit, Massachusetts Environmental Police, Boston Fire and Police Departments, Cambridge Fire Department, the Coast Guard, and Massport Fire Department.

The victim has been identified as a 34-year-old male who is believed to have been homeless.

According to the preliminary investigation by the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County and partner agencies, the victim appeared to jump from the Longfellow Bridge at approximately 11:30 AM, then struggled to stay afloat and called for help before fully submerging.

The death investigation is considered open pending the Medical Examiner’s determination of the victim’s cause and manner of death.
