Officials are warning the public after several bear sightings in Massachusetts this weekend. Two of which took place in Bristol County.

According to the Mansfield Police Department, ACO Collins received two accounts of baby black bear sightings in the area of Essex Street by Ware Street (by the Community Gardens) on Sunday. Wherever baby bear goes, mama bear is sure to follow. One driver on Essex Street stopped to let the baby across the street only to see the mother cross a minute later. For another neighbor, the pair made quick work of a backyard bird feeder.

On Sunday at approximately 11:30 a.m., the Northampton Police Department responded to a bear downtown on Gothic Street near Main Street. The bear climbed up a tree and remained there, attracting a lot of attention from people in the area. Massachusetts Environmental Police responded to assist and eventually had to use a tranquilizer dart to get it out of the tree as it showed no signs of leaving. The bear was relocated to an undisclosed location.

Officials recommend that if you see a black bear, do not attempt to get closer to it or interact with it. Most black bears are wary of humans, but if you find yourself outside when one approaches, clap your hands and talk loudly while slowly moving away.

To discourage the bear from making a habitat of your backyard, put away pet food and bird feeders and ensure trash cans are secure.

If you do spot a bear, you can contact the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (508-389-6300 open M-F 8 am to 4 pm). You can also contact the Mass Environmental Police (24 hours 800-632-8075). In the case of an emergency, always dial 911.
