Loved ones are heartbroken and in shock after Massachusetts man dies while in custody
Authorities are investigating how a Massachusetts man died while he was in custody in a cell at a police department headquarters, Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker and Lawrence Police Head of Department Michael McCarthy announced Saturday.
25-year-old Christian Marte-Martinez of Lawrence was placed into the cell at 1:15 a.m. Saturday, according to officials, after being arrested earlier in the night.
At approximately 5:00 a.m., police discovered Marte-Martinez unresponsive in the cell. They began CPR and other life-saving measures before he was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
There was no word on what Marte-Martinez was being accused of. Those who knew him were heartbroken, in shock, and at a loss for words concerning his sudden passing.
The incident is under investigation by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office State Police Detective Unit and detectives from the Lawrence Police Department.
